When you are busily rushing through life with a thousand things to do you may not consider what is the most important thing in your life. The most valuable commodity you will ever possess is your time. Nothing else comes close and you cannot put a value on time. The richest man in the graveyard would give everything in exchange for the time you have.

You can work all your life and become rich and successful but if you never learn to appreciate your time then when time begins to run out you may well look back and wonder why you wasted so much time worrying about money, wealth and possessions. When time runs out they all become valueless to you.

We throw away time like it was something we had unlimited amounts of yet it is the most precious thing we have. We waste an hour here and there watching tv or shopping and at the time we may be amused but will we look back and regret that we didn't use that time more wisely?

The benefits of time are so obvious that we hardly give it a thought. Time enables you to enjoy spending time with your family and is swallowed up in large amounts by having to work to feed your family and that is a wonderful thing to be able to do but do you want to spend large portions of your limited time to buy a new TV or get the latest gadget?

Most decisions in life are a compromise. We have to make a judgement between alternatives and we forget about the time things take. If you were given a choice between having the latest gadget but losing 3 days of your life which would you choose? The offer is never made in such a way but if you have to spend three days working to get that gadget then that is effectively what you are doing. Giving up time for a gadget.

Very few of us pay real attention to our time steadily ticking away. We think of time as miutes rather than years. We rush to cash the train on time but we use up our time carelessly not thinking about how satisfying or rewarding our use of that time has been. We should think like a time manager. We are not talking time management for business here. We are talking about time management in our personal life.

Time management is such a useful skill that we really should be taught as children. Students at college who 'get it' and understand time management are much better at managing to get their work done on time and may well have more time available to enjoy themselves because of their time management skills.

Most people have only ever thought of learning time management for business purposes but in reality it applies to life in general. The better and more satisfying use we make of our time the happier we will be. It will probably make us more successful too with all the benefits that can bring.
