Building a blog or should I say building a successful blog is not for the faint hearted. It requires a great deal of determination and drive.

The reason for this is because you rarely see the fruits of your labour very quickly and it takes time to even start earning $100 a week. What I want to do in this article is give you a few basic steps when trying to create a successful blog.

1 You need to choose a template for your blog, if your are a newbie blogger is excellent if youre a little more experienced then you cannot beat wordpress. It basically comes down to preference some people argue that blogger is less flexible but I have always found a blogger blog to rank better with the search engines.

2 Plan how your going to structure it. I have a few bits of advice here, do not litter your site immediately with adsense and affiliate links, this will turn readers off and your blog will fail. You need to get your content right first then when people start reading your blog try to monetize but even then make it subtle and ensure it fits in well with your template theme.

3 Your content must be unique, filled with quality and include the keywords you are pitching for. Try to keep duplicate content to no more than 20% of your content anymore than this and your putting your PR at risk. Your keyword density should be around 3 to 5 %, there is much debate over this but I have always stuck to this rule and seen much success. Update your content on a daily basis, or at least 5 days a week.

4 Ensure people who are visiting your blog are given the option to subscribe to your feed. Feedburner Is a great place to promote your site feed.

5 Once you have the layout of your blog set up and ready to go it is now time to start promoting it. There are many methods to try and do this but I just want to concentrate on one for the purposes of this article and that is backlinks. Without backlinks your site is never going to rank high in the search engines. The best way to get these backlinks is to do what I am doing right now, write articles, write write and write again. People will read your article maybe visit your site or just might publish your article on their blog giving you another backlink.

These are the basic steps to starting a new blog. Follow them and be dedicated to writing everyday and your on the right tracks. Remember SEO work is not guaranteed therefore you must stick to googles rules as tightly as possible.
